- Subject: [*] Mac Stack size init
-
- Dear folks,
-
- I have written a tiny INIT to solve the following problem: The processor stack
- size on the 68000 class machines (Plus, SE, PB100, etc) is for some reason set
- too small (about 2k Hex) for major programs to run properly, resulting in
- errors
- of the form id=28. This is most noticible with MacTCP programs such as
- "Mailstrom". Setting the stack to the Mac II class default, 6000 Hex, fixes
- the
- problem. As only 4k is lost to the OS, there is not much problem with lost
- RAM.
- The Init has been tested on several 68000 type machines, and several Mac II
- class machines (where it doesn't adjust the stack) with no problems. The INIT
- is Free.

- submitted
- version (1.0.2).
-
-
- A number of changes have been made, including:
-
- * Now supports many keyboard shortcuts, for standard and extended
- keyboard.
- * Select All added.
- * Now supports amplitude transformations.
- * Added shortcuts in playback rate edit text box for standard Mac
- frequencies.
- * Provides compression and expansion of standard Macintosh System 7 sound
- files,
- such as system beep sounds.
- * Now supports for LCII.
- * Added Use Defaults button and Undo support for Preferences.
- * Remembers microphone configuration between sessions.
-
-
- The following bugs have been fixed -
-
- * Fixed bug in Normalise that meant Undo did not work when Normalise was the
- first edit to be made to a sample.
- * Fixed bug in Open/Import where debugger was entered on insert floppy.
- * Export now exports whole file instead of just the current selection.
- * 3:1 compressed Audio IFF files are now opened correctly.

-
- Info-Mac'ers:
- Thank you for all your helpful input. It seems that the choice of the net is
- still the Tektronix Phaser IIIpxi for price, quality, and PostScript (1 & 2).
- For those of you who asked, I am not avoiding this printer, merely looking for
- options. The ".mil" on the end of my address implies that anything we procure
- must come from a "Competitive bid" on the open market -- an slow, painful and
- usually incompetent way to do things, but c'est la vie!
- Some of you recommended looking into the HP DeskWriter C. My impression is
- that the quality of this product falls far below that of the Phaser. I could
- be wrong, discussion is welcome. Another respondent suggested the HPPaintJet
- XL300. I have not heard of this one before -- I'll look into it.
- Special thanks to boris@ulysses.att.com for pointing out that spray wax
- printers like the Phaser III do poorly on transparencies. I'll take that into
- consideration. However, we do have a Phaser II for transparencies so that
- shouldn't be a big problem. Boris, you didn't mention inkjet printers in your

- Subject: CompuServe & Shareware fees (A)
-
- In 10-150, Alberto Ricci disagrees with my assessment of the 15% CompuServe
- commission charge for collected shareware fees as being "VERY reasonable."
-
- He says:
-
- >I think it's unfair.
- >First of all, Compuserve gets the shareware fee in terms of $$$, and
- >gives it back to the author in terms of hours.
-
- But that's not so. The author gets $$$ from CompuServe--cash payments.
- Here's the relevant section of the agreement available on-line:
-
- >FEE PAYMENTS. CompuServe will collect fees from its Users for Registration of
- >Shareware. CompuServe will pay Provider 85% of fees collected by CompuServe
- for
- >Registration of Shareware. CompuServe will make payment of fees due within
- sixty
- >(60) days following the end of the billing month in which the related charges
- >are made to the Users by CompuServe.
-
- What services does CompuServe perform for 15%? Well, it does all the back
- office work of collection: processes the charge card slips, deposits the
- checks, records the payments. A typical shareware author might find it very
- difficult to get merchant status with his bank to accept charge cards, for
- example--or provide the telephone support to handle registration requests
- day and night. How many shareware authors are good businesspeople--how many
- have 800 numbers, for instance?
-
- And let's not overlook the more subtle factors. If a user downloads a
- shareware package, lurking in his brain will be the notion that CompuServe
- or the author "knows" somehow that he downloaded the software. That
- encourages registration--and making the registration so convenient also
- encourages it. (The fee is just charged to the usual CompuServe account--no
- need to write a special check, make a special phone call, address a
- letter.) Think, too, how convenient it would be to send out upgrade notices
- and bug reports if all your users were on electronic services, reachable by
- e-mail.
-
- I still think charging 15% is a bargain...

- From: Sundar_Prasad@mtsg.ubc.ca
- Subject: Converting Mac Postscript to EPS 'with preview' (Q)
-
- Before I start, let me say that I have been doing a fair bit of converting
- vanilla postscript (output from graphics packages on mainframes and work-
- stations) to EPS files on the Mac which also (very important) include a
- preview of the graphic as a PICT resource, so that placing the EPS file in
- a PageMaker document becomes very easy. I do this using a DA called
- Smart Art (from Emerald City Software).
-
- Some minor modification may be made to the PS file (bounding box info is
- added to the header and the showpage instruction at the bottom of the file
- is deleted), and then the file is 're-imaged' on a LaserWriter using Smart
- Art. Instead of printing the graphic, the printer returns a bitmap to the
- Mac, which Smart Art appends as a resource to the PS file, thus making it
- a true-blue EPS file.
-
- I want to do the same to postscript generated by the Mac (i.e. change that
- PS file to an EPS file with a preview). There are some very good reasons
- for doing this. Graphing programs like Wings and IGOR produce good results
- if I print the graphic from within the application, but don't give me good
- control over page layout esp. if I want to include text and other items. I'd
- rather have my graph as a separate entity which I can conveniently
- manipulate in PageMaker. Cutting and pasting from Wings/IGOR to PageMaker
- is goofy because it reduces my graphic to a 72 dpi horror that looks obscene
- in print. Wings/IGOR do not save the graphic as an EPS file (like
- DeltaGraph) and so the only logical way was to do the same thing we did with
- our PS files from other platforms.
-
- I generated a Postscript file on the Mac (eg. by printing my graph from
- Wings and routing the output file to disk rather than the printer). I then
- tried to re-image this file as before, but no-go. The printer light flashes
- like its processing the PS code, Smart Art says its receiving an image, but
- then there's no image. I have looked at the PS code itself (Mac generated
- PS has one of the scariest headers around), but can't see anything wrong.
- If I just dump the file to the printer, it prints OK. It just won't re-image
- properly, which is extremely disappointing :-(.
-
- Is there something that I am missing when I handle Mac postscript? Why does
- this preview process work only on PS from other platforms? I would really
- appreciate any ideas on this subject. Thanks.

-
- Dear moderators,
- If a demo version of a program is offered to the archives this
- should be, and in most cases *is*, indicated in the description of it,
- and the demo should be/is put in the proper directory.
- Sometimes the description of a program does *not* tell that only
- a demo version is offered. I think that such a program should also be moved
- to the demo directory, if it appears to be a demo only after somebody
- downloaded it.
-
- If you agree with me, cp/auto-menus-ii.hqx
- and app/mac-roots-57.hqx
- (the latter is a very reduced version of the real thing)
- must be moved to the demo directory.
-
- I very rarely download demo versions, maybe this applies to others too.
- Precise descriptions in what way the demo is different from the full program
- may still make people want to download the demo, in certain cases.
-
- So proper placement of demo version might reduce the number of transported
- bytes and prevent disappointments. Maybe other netters discovered more
- displaced demo versions of programs and might want to mention these to the

- Subject: FTP Programs for the Mac (Addendum)
-
- A couple of comments and clarifications concerning my posting in
- Infomac Digest vol 10 #149....
-
- First, a correction: The IP adress for ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu, as reported
- even in Mike Gleason's Mac FTP List, is 128.174.20.50. I still have not
- been able to connect to this IP address. However, my Vax FTP client
- parsed ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu to 141.142.20.50, which in turn identified
- itself as zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu in the welcome banner. Here, I found
- NCSA Telnet version 2.4.02, with docs, as well as the combined NCSA/BYU
- Telnet version 2.5B (beta).
-
- Second, a clarification. In the discussion of my FTP needs, it can be
- construed that I am complaining about the Mac FTP programs that
- automatically grab directory listings when you change directories. This
- is not so. This feature is essential for the windowed interface, and
- I fully support it. I especially like the programs such as Fetch that
- remember the contents of directories when you return to them. My complaint
- is with the Internet. Its backbone is too small to support the massive
- amount of traffic that it carries. I experience an average data transfer
- rate of about 750 characters per second; I've never seen better than 2k
- cps. I think that's pretty crummy. I hope that upgrade plans are in the
- works for it. (bandwidth limit exceeded for this topic...)

-
- This is not entirely correct. The newest release version of NCSA Telnet
- is 2.4.02. It does not include an FTP client. The FTP client was added
- by BYU. We do have a copy of 2.4.19 on ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu in the
- Mac/Telnet/contributions directory, but it came from BYU. I would think
- that bert.cs.byu.edu would be the preferred source for getting version
- 2.4 modified (by BYU) to include the FTP client.
-
- On the other hand, version 2.5 (still in beta) is a joint project between
- NCSA and BYU. It is available on both ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu and bert.cs.byu.edu.
- The newest bug fixes and enhancements to the beta version seem to show up on
- bert before they show up on ftp, so I would probably still look on bert first,
- but when version 2.5 is officially released, it will be available in both
- places.

-
- A recent posting from Alan Hewatt implied that the powerbook
- 100 is to be discontinued. I imagine he got this from Apple
- France (or a dealer) who are usually well informed. Can anyone
- stateside confirm this? Is the PB 100 to be dropped pure and
- simple or is it to be replaced, with the PB 140 by the upcoming
- PB 145?
-
- If there is to be a replacement, I would hope that it will
- retain all the qualities of the PB 100 that Alan so rightly
- underlines: compactness and lightness (the PB100 is smaller than
- the 140 or the 170), its RAM disk capability and the possibility
- of connecting its hard drive to a desk Mac via an SCSI cable.
- And I would also hope that some kind of docking station, or at
- least an external video outlet would be built into nay
- replacement.
-
- I think there is another point that is important. The PB100
- gives a much better performance/price ratio than the PB140.
- Believe it or not, I am writing this on a Toshiba T1000LE which
- I bought specifically for its portability while on a sabbatical
- stay, but after nearly a year of use I actually like the damn
- thing! However, I'm thinking of moving up to a PB as my desk
- machines are Macs but I want nothing bigger than the Tosh and
- preferably smaller and lighter...
-
- I also seem to remember that the PB100 is assembled by Sony
- and the PB 140 and 170 by Apple. Could there be some unseen or
- unsung difference between these two giants which may result in
- the PB100 being killed off? If so, the users will be the losers.

- Charles, we seem to be mirrors of each other. Last year I wanted TT fonts
- for all the built-in Type 1's in my LaserWriter IINT. It was expensive in

- I'm no lawyer, but my guess is the key issue is whether the TT fonts

- translate from one format to the other. TTConverter 1.1 can translate to

- Subject: Multiple references to footnote in Word 5.0 with System 7 (C)
-
- In Info-Mac Digest V10 #150 Martin gave Microsoft's workaround for the multiple
- reference problem. This method does work, but its results are not perfect. One
- problem is that Word has a built-in minimum size for a graphic frame. This
- minimum size is 0.17 inches on a side, about the size of an uppercase "M" in
- Times 12. The pasted character appears in the upper left corner of the graphic
- frame, and is in the right position for a superscripted number, but there is
- too
- much white space to the right of it.
-
- A second problem occurs when you edit your text. As Microsoft promises, the
- second reference automatically changes when the first changes. But what happens
- when you rearrange your text so radically that the pasted, linked picture
- reference is placed before an original reference with a lower number? For
- example, say you've created two references to an article that is originally
- number three in your bibliography. Move the text containing the pasted picture
- "3" to before the text containing the first reference to article number two.
- Clearly the footnotes should be renumbered, but Microsoft's method will not do
- it.
-
- He had the right approach in complaining to Microsoft. We can gripe all we want
- in the Info-Mac forum, but Microsoft won't be motivated to change anything if
- we
- don't let them know we're unhappy, and that their clever workaround doesn't let
- them off the hook.

-
- There are indeed incorrect, Justin. For one thing, I NEVER posted any such
- messages in INFO-MAC. Never. (All Info-Mac issues are readily available,
- Justin. Check yourself.)
-
- What you are quoting from is a note I addressed to one of your beta
- testers, quoting some things I had read about SuperDisk and MDS and asking
- if the problems were still present in the current versions. I never
- received a reply from him. Apparently he forwarded my comments on to you.
-
- I was referring to a SuperDisk problem (I wrote "MDS" instead of "SD" in my
- note to your tester--my error--sorry!) reported by Adam Engst in Info-Mac
- volume 10, issue 92. Very briefly, here's a portion of what Adam said then:
-
- >If you crash your Mac or
- >lose power while compressing a file from the Finder by adding
- >.s to the file or folder name, the file SuperDisk is working on

- >version to me - if they had I would have corrected that
- >statement in a later issue of TidBITS. I suspect that SD 2.0
- >will not have this bug.
-
- That's where my report of "burnt toast" came from, as well as the other
- phrases you quoted.
-
- Now let me ask you a direct question. When did you learn that StuffIt 1.5.1
- created corrupt archives of MDS-compressed files? Considering that StuffIt
- 1.5.1 is the compression program distributed by AOL to all its members and
- that you have a forum on AOL, how come you never mentioned this problem in
- your own forum? Didn't it ever occur to you that your customers and the
- rest of us on AOL might want to know of such a data-destroying conflict?
- Why, even today, are you still writing as if the problem only affects beta

- >you shouldn't move a PowerBook while it's in Sleep mode. God only knows
- >why, but....
-
- ** WHOLLY UNOFFICIAL COMMENT <Proceed at your own risk> **
-
- Actually, what the User's Guide for Macintosh PowerBook Computers
- actually says is: always shutdown before *transporting* (page 223) but
- "Do not *move* the computer when you can hear its hard disk spinning.
- When you put the computer to SLEEP, wait until the screen is blank
- *before moving* the computer." (emphasis added) page 222.
-
- The risk to moving a running PowerBook is jarring the disk heads and
- causing a hardware disk crash (a nasty event). Putting a PowerBook to
- sleep causes the hard drive to park its heads just like shutting down
- does. Hence, sleep protects as well as shutdown.
-
- The best (from someone with no known connection with Apple) explanation
- I've heard for Apple's prescription is that it's possible that putting a
- PowerBook in a briefcase and closing the lid could put enough pressure
- on the case to depress a key on the keyboard (lots of MeSsy DOS notebook
- owners have taken out their displays with such a maneuver) and activate
- the hard drive.
-
- I carry my PB 170 in a well padded case with no chance of undue external
- pressure. It travels asleep all the time without ill effect. Our local
- Apple rep loaned us a PB 140 to evaluate for our MBA program. She
- arrived at my office and pulled the PB out of her purse. When I opened
- it and touched the power button, I found it was asleep (with the battery
- almost, but not quite drained--it had been asleep in her purse for
- hours). It traveled from one faculty office to another (also asleep)
- for several days without being the worse for it.
-
- The PB 170 reviewer for MacWorld used the one he was evaluating on a
- subway and also says he started up some disk intensive tasks and put it
- RUNNING in his backpack and bicycled five blocks through New York
- traffic (the sort of thing one might do with someone else's PowerBook
- ;-) The PB 170 proved rugged enough to withstand the abuse.
-
- I've used mine (as a passenger :) in a pickup truck on two lane country
- roads (at night). I wouldn't recommend treating one that way on a
- regular basis, but there's plenty of evidence that the little rascals
- are not notably fragile. As long as you don't do anything to it that
- you wouldn't do to your first born, you'll probably be okay (I've had
- mine more than six months and it's STILL awesome).

- Stuffit Lite is a nice program. I would really like to know its status.
-
- Well Al, I honestly don't know anything about what happens to SIT Lite after

-
- 1) Get the latest StuffIt Expander from Info-Mac. That way, after the beta
- expires, you can still unstuff your SIT Lite files.
- 2) Barring that, try the "Michelangelo Tactic": set your clock back a month
- so that SIT Lite won't expire right away.
- 3) Wire Aladdin and ask 'em when a final version arrives. Also ask them why

-
- Personally, I've avoided SIT Lite like the plague after noticing several

-
- #####CyberGif Description
- CyberGif is a Macintosh GIF viewer.
- "Why another one?" you may ask. Well, CyberGif has a lot of features that
- aren't available on the other GIF viewers that I have found. I tried the
- other gif viewers/editors and found the features that I wanted in a GIF
- viewer.
- These features include:
-
- -Fast Decode & Display--see the gifs as you decode them.
- -Small Program Size--only 54k! Save disk space for GIFs--not viewers!
- -Dithering--CyberGif allows black & white Macs (w/ColorQD) to see GIF files!
- Please note that CyberGif does this AUTOMATICALLY only if all monitors
- hooked up to the Mac are in two color mode. Multiple monitors of differing
- depths may confuse CyberGif. A future version will fix this.
- -Slide Show--just put the GIFs you want in a directory and watch the full
- screen show! Also note that the GIFs must be of type 'GIFf' to be seen in
- the slide show.
- -Growable/Scrollable windows--you can choose to stretch/shrink the window!
- -Fit Gif to Screen--and keeps the GIF proportions correct!
- -Full Screen Window--for those times when a window and menu bar are too
- distracting!
- -System Palette Option--see how the GIF would look as a background picture!
- -Information Window--look at the current GIF's colors and much more!
- -Flash--get rid of color residue that most GIF viewer leave in the background!
-
- #####NOTES:
-
- CyberGif has been developed and tested on a Macintosh IIcx running
- System 7.0 with both Virtual Memory and 32-bit mode on.
-
- I have personally tested CyberGif on the following Macs:
- SE/30, System 6; IIcx, System 6; IIcx, System 7; IIci, System 6;
- LC, System 6.0.8; IIsi, System 7; Classic II, System 7; PowerBook 140, System
- 7.
-
- On any machine without Color Quickdraw, CyberGif dies a quick and ugly death.
- This will be fixed in a future version.
-
- On multiple-monitor machines, automatic dithering will NOT work unless
- ALL screens are set to 1-bit mode.
-
- #####CyberGif Version History
- 1.1 - This version hopefully fixes the problems that some users had with
- Mac LCs and the HDT Lightshow init. It also includes a way to pause
- the slideshow. (June, 1992)
- 1.0 - The first official release of CyberGif. (May, 1992)
